Industry overview

What is shaping pulp & paper

Paper and packaging demand is shifting from writing and printing grades towards packaging, hygiene and recycled products. Buyers are printers, converters, brand owners and schools, each with different priorities.

  • E-commerce is driving packaging demand
  • Recycled and sustainable grades are gaining preference
  • Price and delivery reliability dominate B2B buying

Client challenge

The manufacturer had surplus capacity and wanted to export packaging board, but did not know which markets offered the best combination of demand, prices and logistics. Previous export attempts had relied on traders and produced inconsistent orders with thin margins.

  1. 1Brief
  2. 2Importer and converter interviews
  3. 3Market scoring
  4. 4Insight

We interviewed importers, converters and packaging buyers about demand, quality expectations, prices and supplier relationships, and scored markets on attractiveness and feasibility. Interviews were conducted in Arabic and English, and we gathered price quotations and quality specifications from buyers in each market.

Sampling strategy

  • Business respondents were screened on role, company size and involvement in the decision before being invited.
  • Online respondents were drawn from verified panel members who matched the screening criteria, with quotas on key profile attributes.
  • Qualitative participants were recruited purposively to cover the full range of experiences that mattered, rather than for statistical representation.

  • Digital fingerprinting and duplicate checks
  • Attention, speed and straight-lining checks
  • Review of open-ended answers
  • Recordings and transcripts for every session
  • Re-screening of qualitative recruits

  • Market model built from secondary data and primary evidence
12

Key findings

  • Gulf markets offered steady demand from food packaging converters with manageable logistics.
  • Distributors in the selected markets placed regular orders within the first year, giving the mill a stable export base.
Converter interviews revealed quality expectations that trade data could not.
13

Recommendations

  • Build on the core insight: converter interviews revealed quality expectations that trade data could not.
  • Focus effort where the evidence was strongest: gulf markets offered steady demand from food packaging converters with manageable logistics.
  • Re-measure after the changes to confirm the effect.
14

Business impact

  • The manufacturer appointed distributors in two Gulf countries first.

What changed in the business as a result of the work. Impact is described qualitatively.

15

Deliverables & next steps

  • Insight report and management presentation
  • Cleaned data file and data tables
  • Repeat the measure after changes are in place to track progress.
  • A natural follow-on question: how price-sensitive are converters?
