Client challenge

The company planned a new facility in India and wanted to know which materials, consumables and services could be sourced locally, and which would need to be imported.

04

Research objectives

  • Deliver on the brief: assessing local supply chains for a chip assembly and test facility.
  • Understand the views, needs and behaviour of suppliers screened.
  • Uncover the motivations and barriers people do not state in a survey.
  • Give the client evidence it can act on within 10 weeks.
05

Target audience

The work focused on 200 suppliers screened.

Research methodology

A qualitative design, built to uncover motivations, decision processes and the language people actually use.

  1. 1Brief
  2. 2Supplier screening
  3. 3Capability interviews
  4. 4Insight

We screened potential suppliers of chemicals, gases, packaging, precision parts, maintenance and cleanroom services, then interviewed promising firms about capabilities, quality systems and capacity. Results were organised in a supplier database with readiness ratings. Site visits to a shortlist of suppliers helped confirm claims about cleanliness, equipment and quality systems that phone interviews could not verify.

Sampling strategy

suppliers screened
200
  • Business respondents were screened on role, company size and involvement in the decision before being invited.
  • Online respondents were drawn from verified panel members who matched the screening criteria, with quotas on key profile attributes.
  • Qualitative participants were recruited purposively to cover the full range of experiences that mattered, rather than for statistical representation.

Data collection

interviewed
60
Brief & design Sampling & set-up Fieldwork Analysis Reporting Indicative split of the 10-week timeline.
  • The online survey was mobile-friendly and offered in respondents' languages.
  • Interviews and discussions were led by experienced moderators using a guide agreed with the client.
10

Data quality & validation

  • Digital fingerprinting and duplicate checks
  • Attention, speed and straight-lining checks
  • Review of open-ended answers
  • Recordings and transcripts for every session
  • Re-screening of qualitative recruits
  • Logic and range checks on the final data
  • Work carried out under our ISO 20252 quality procedures
11

Data analysis

  • Thematic coding of interviews and discussions
  • Journey and decision mapping
  • Interactive dashboard for ongoing tracking
12

Key findings

  • Local suppliers could meet many services and packaging needs, but specialised materials would need imports initially.
Clear readiness ratings helped plan a realistic localisation roadmap.
13

Recommendations

  • Build on the core insight: clear readiness ratings helped plan a realistic localisation roadmap.
  • Focus effort where the evidence was strongest: local suppliers could meet many services and packaging needs, but specialised materials would need imports initially.
  • Re-measure after the changes to confirm the effect.
14

Business impact

  • The company planned supplier development for selected categories.
  • The supplier database was handed to the procurement team as a living tool, updated as suppliers improved their certifications and capacity.

What changed in the business as a result of the work. Impact is described qualitatively.

15

Deliverables & next steps

  • Insight report and management presentation
  • Cleaned data file and data tables
  • Interactive dashboard
  • Repeat the measure after changes are in place to track progress.
  • A natural follow-on question: what do B2B buyers need from local suppliers?

Client identity is withheld to protect confidentiality.
